  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • Citations (footnotes or endnotes) follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, style guidelines
  • Your submission adheres to all the style, formatting, and figure/image guidelines included in the Author Guidelines section of the Submissions page.
  • The author has indicated in the Comments to the Editor if peer review is desired.

Author Guidelines

Style & Formatting:

Make sure that your personal and manuscript information (author(s), title, keywords, abstract, etc.) is separate from the actual article. This information will be added to the article in the final stages by the editors.

Garamond size 12 font is preferred.

Single-space articles with the first word of each paragraph indented.

Left justify your margins.

Follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, style guidelines.

Where available, provide full URLs for the references.

Figure and Image Guidelines:

Illustrations, figures, and tables should be placed within the text at the appropriate points (preferred), but may also be uploaded as supplemental files and linked separately (preferred for large audio or video files).

All photographs and reproductions should be clearly documented with appropriate caption information. Contributors are responsible for obtaining permission for the reproduction of copyrighted materials and for reproduction fees. Images should be scanned at a resolution between 150–300 dpi, preferably in color.

Implement accessible practices by following the Visual Resources Association Bulletin (VRAB) Figure and Image Guidelines.

Initial Submission:

Whatever you type into the online fields is what you will see in the cover pages of the article in the published issue of the electronic journal. You may revise this information any time before publication and/or upload new versions of the article as need be. Please be prepared to input the following information:

Article Title,

An abstract of 400 words or less,

Short biographical information about the author or authors (a few sentences),

Acknowledgements (when appropriate)

Keywords (specific search terms for your article),

Subject categories (choose from menu options),

Article in document format, such as Microsoft Word.

Adjustments and Editing:

If your uploaded information or manuscript requires adjustments, the editors will contact you through the online system. The copy editors tend to use the "track changes" tool to suggest edits. You may accept or reject the changes individually or accept them all at one time. Please make sure to remove all "track changes" markings in your document before uploading the final copy. When extensive rewriting is required before a submission is publishable, the article will be returned to the author with suggestions for rewriting. The editorial staff may not seek approval for minor editing done for style and grammar. Authors re-submitting manuscripts are expected to complete their revisions in a timely manner.

To upload the most current version of your article, you should NOT create a new entry, but edit what you previously uploaded. (You do not have to go through all of the steps of adding personal and manuscript information already stored online, but just need to revise the article portion of what you originally submitted).

If you have any questions about this process, the system, or need any assistance, please contact Amy Lazet, Production Editor. To make the issue uniform, we will be checking to ensure that all the information is complete and contacting you if we have questions (you may receive automatic e-mails from the system about these changes).
